Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to go head-
to-head with one another in a mammoth double
deal at Liverpool.
According to AS, the Spanish giants will look to
land Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk.
The two clubs have seen their standards already
slip this season and there are worries that their
status as European powerhouses is depleting.
And it coincides with Liverpool’s rise to the top –
which has been put down to the effects of Klopp
and Van Dijk.
The German manager has taken the Reds to the
next level after winning the Champions League last
season.
They are also challenging for the Premier League
and currently sit five points clear at the top.
As for Van Dijk, the Dutchman arrived at Anfield for
a then-world record fee for a defender at £75m.
But he has already justified that price-tag after
transforming the backline at Liverpool.
Last season, the Merseyside outfit conceded the
least goals in the Premier League with just 22.
And it led to Van Dijk landing the PFA Player of the
Year award and he is also the favourite to win the
Ballon d’Or.
That would make him the first player outside of
Real Madrid and Barcelona to win the award since
Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United in 2008.
The following year, the Portuguese made the move
to Madrid and AS are reporting that history could
repeat itself.
As for Klopp, Zinedine Zidane and Ernesto Valverde
are already coming under flak in the eternal
pressure cookers that are their respective clubs.
Both La Liga sides have made disappointing
starts to their league seasons, with neither
managing more than two wins from their
opening four games and both outside of the
top two in the early-season table.
There is pressure on Ernesto Valverde at the
Nou Camp and Zinedine Zidane at the
Santiago Bernabeu to improve results, and
failure to win domestic or European honours
this campaign could see either of them out of
work next summer.
Drama often follows Real and Barca and sacking
their head coaches early in the season is not
outside of their realms.
However, it is highly unlikely that Liverpool would
ever entertain an offer for either man – let alone
both of them.
