THE HISTORY OF CHELSEA FC

Chelsea football club is an English professional
football club founded in 1905

Chelsea was founded on 10 March 1905 but
before it was named Chelsea some name were
considered like Kensington FC, Stamford bridge FC
and London FC.
In 1915 Chelsea reached the FA cup final
where they lost to Sheffield Wednesday at old
Trafford
In 1952 Ted Drake( former Arsenal and England
center forward) became the manager of Chelsea
football club.
In 1954-55 season Chelsea won the first League
championship in the leadership of Ted Drake
In 1961 Ted Drake was dismissed as a
manager and Tommy Docherty was appointed as
his replacement
In 1964-65 season Chelsea won the league cul
under the leadership of Tommy Docherty
Tommy Docherty was dismissed and Dave
Sexton was appointed as his successor
In 1970 Chelsea won the FA cup by beating
Leeds United 2 – 1
In 1971 Chelsea won the first European
triumph which was the UEFA cup winners cup after
beating Real Madrid in Athens
In 1970’s Chelsea was relegated from the first
division championship from the first time because
of the financial crisis which hindered the club
In 1983-84 season Chelsea won the second
division championship under John Neal and was
promoted again to the first division
In 1988 Chelsea was relegated again but it
bounce back immediately by winning the second
division title in 1988-89 season
In 1996-97 season under Ruud Gullit as a
player manager Chelsea won the FA cup
Ruus Gullit was replaced by Gialunca Vialli
whose reign saw Chelsea won the League cup, UEFA cup winners cup and the UEFA super cup in 1998 and the FA cup in 2000
Chelsea also mounted a strong title challenge in
1998–99, finishing four points behind champions
Manchester United, and made their first appearance
in the UEFA Champions League
Vialli was sacked in favour of Claudio Ranieri, who guided Chelsea to the 2002 FA Cup
Final and Champions League qualification in 2002–
03.

THE ROMAN ABRAHMOVICH TAKEOVER/ERA
In July 2003, Bates sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for £140 million.
Over £100 million was spent on new players,
but Ranieri was unable to deliver any trophies, and
was replaced by José Mourinho
Under Mourinho, Chelsea became the fifth
English team to win back-to-back league
championships since the Second World War
(2004–05 and 2005–06), in addition to winning an
FA Cup (2007) and two League Cups (2005 and
2007).
In 2007-08 season Chelsea started poorly this
led to Jose Mourinho’s dismissal and Avram Grant was appointed as a Chelsea manager
Avram Grant led Chelsea to the first UEFA
champions league final which Chelsea lost on
penalties to Manchester United
In 2009 Avram Grant was sacked and Guus Hiddink was appointed as a caretaker manager
and won the FA cup
In 2009-10 season Chelsea appointed Carlo Ancellot and won the premier league and the
double FA cups in his reign and also becoming the
first English top-flight club to score 100 league
goals in a season since 1963.
In 2011 Ancelloti was sacked and Andre villas Boas was appointed as his replacement
On 30 July 2011, during the pre-season, Villas-
Boas won his first piece of silverware with Chelsea,
the 2011 Barclays Asia Trophy
On 21 February 2012, during a Champions
League match against Napoli, Villas-Boas left Frank
Lampard, Michael Essien and Ashley Cole on the
bench. Chelsea lost 3–1 and the club’s technical
director asked for an explanation of the team
selection on behalf of Abramovich.
In 2012 Villas-Boas was relieved of his
managerial duties by Chelsea, with assistant
manager Roberto Di Matteo being appointed as
caretaker manager on an interim basis until the end
of the season.
In 2012, Roberto Di Matteo led Chelsea to
their seventh FA Cup, and their first UEFA Champions League title, beating Bayern Munich 4–
3 on penalties, the first London club to win the
trophy
In November 2012 Roberto Di Mateo was
sacked and Rafael benitez was appointed and
won the first UEFA Europa league for Chelsea


In 2013 Jose Mourinho returned and won the
League cup and the premier league in 2015
Mourinho was sacked after four months of the
following season after a poor start.
In 2017 Chelsea appointed Antonio Conte
and led Chelsea to 6th English Premier league title
and the 8th FA cup the following season
In 2018 Conte was sacked after a 5th-place
finish and replaced with Maurizio Sarri under
whom Chelsea reached the League Cup final, which
they lost on penalties to Manchester City and won
the Europa League for a second time, beating
Arsenal 4–1 in the final. Sarri then left the club to
become manager of Juventus and was then
replaced by former Chelsea player Frank Lampard.
